Teaching 6th Grade!
This is my second year teaching 6th grade with Summit Academy. I served as Team Lead for the 2017-2018 school year and am the Student Council Representative this year for the 2018-2019 school year.
The subjects I teach are Language Arts and Health.
Language Arts is one of my favorite subjects. I love to help my students recognize that reading and writing are involved in every subject area, career, and even just in daily life whether through emails, texts, etc. We use Dibels testing, DAZE assessments, Words Thier Way, Wonders Curriculum, and Fountas and Pinnell at Summit Academy to help level each student in order to address their individual needs. For writing, I always provide a rubric so that my students and parents know exactly what is required of them. We do a Children's Literature Book Report, Expository Nonfiction Paper, Opinion/Argumentative Paper, a Heritage Paper, a Country From Around The World Paper, and many others. I like to take time to individually grade each paper and make notes/corrections, find time to conference with students, and have them peer review each other's papers. See Example 1 below for what a rubric looks like in my classroom.
Health is especially fun to teach and is one of my greatest passions. I took the state standards and designed a curriculum to be well-rounded. I was discouraged at only seeing anti-drug and reproductive system lessons in the health curriculum. I designed a curriculum that incorporates all the body systems to get a good base understanding of how everything works together, Mental Health, Social Health, Financial Health (which happens to be everyone's favorite surprisingly), Consumer Health, Physical Health (which includes proper showering and soaping, trimming nails, deodorant, and working out) Environmental Health, Nutrition, Safety (fire, sun, lockdowns, etc.), and how wounds heal/how to care for them. After surveying students last year (2017-2018), Health was their favorite class! That was exciting to see as my goal was to inspire them to see how health connects to everything and the possible careers, whether in Medicine, Safety, Public Health, and others that are out there. Parents emailed me to say how pleased they were with their students wanting to save money, become doctors and nurses, and be more aware of the world around them.
