Standard 4: Instructional Strategies
Summary
A teacher must be able to use critical thinking, problem solving, and performance skills as the means by which they teach their students. In order to be an effective teacher in practice, one must not only be able to prepare lesson plans, but be able to facilitate and assess student learning in a variety of purposeful ways that encourages the development of every aspect of learning.
Common Artifact- Everyday Math Lessons
In third grade, I was able to work with my students for two weeks on different math skills. I included pictures, a hands-on art project called frames and arrows, technology, various worksheets and problems, objects, and sound effects in my lessons. It engaged them and all learners grasped the concepts that were taught. Below is an example of my work that the students each created on their own.

Action Research Project- Making Brain Movies
I had two weeks to work with five 2nd graders for an action research project I completed in the spring of 2014. These 2nd graders lacked the ability to comprehend stories appropriately and needed a new strategy to assist them. I based my project on the article Training The Mind’s Eye by Donna Wilson and used the strategy of making brain movies to help my students comprehend and retell the stories they read. By the time I finished my time with them, they answered all questions correctly, drew more detailed and colorful pictures, were more engaged with each other and me, and wrote more. I collected data on them and put their pre and post test scores in an excel sheet.

Instructional Strategies
As part of my action research project, I had my students complete a self assessment. This helped me see if they were enjoying and applying themselves. They were also able to adjust their performance themselves and learn something a different aspect of learning.I recorded their data to easily see how I was doing as the teacher.
