When I think about English Language Arts, I think about analyzing, creating, writing expressively, dissecting words and understanding their meanings, learning how the world fits together, and understanding how to express oneself. I endeavor to make my classroom a safe space where we can discuss various opinions and become more well-rounded together and as individuals. I give students the chance to teach each other in small groups, in front of the class, and conference with me one on one to set personal goals be it in reading or writing to that we can learn from each other.

Wonders CurriculumWonders is the new reading curriculum the district as begun to use. It is all inclusive with fluency, writing, language, and reading.

Words Their WayWe use Words Their Way to level students in spelling. I have loved this curriculum since I started using it in MN years ago. It breaks it down so we know exactly what skills students are lacking in. Ideally, it would be done almost every day, but with Wonders being the push, we get it in only a few times a week. I can still see a difference in my students' spelling though.

WritingTo be a good writer is to understand how all parts of language fit together. I create rubrics for every paper so my students know what is expected of them. It is also great for parents to know. I cannot count how many times parents an/or students have come to me trying to change a grade, or "not knowing what was expected," but when I turn them to the rubric, it eliminates all that frustration.
