Standard 8: Assessment
Summary
In order for a teacher to evaluate and guarantee intellectual, social, and physical development of their students, he or she must understand the use of formal and informal assessment strategies. Teachers must also understand the difference between formative assessment and summative evaluation and be able to identify characteristics of assessment types.
Common Artifact- Words Their Way first grade spelling inventory
Assessment is a big part of teaching and is vital to the progression of a student. With first graders, I was able to complete a spelling inventory with students, create a data sheet using the results of the spelling inventory, and then use the data to create leveled groups and plan instruction. Every assessment I have ever used, in any grade, has shaped my instruction and allowed me to see how students are truly doing at mastering a skill independently.
